TRAFFIC IN NAIROBI

I know it is quite a nightmare to most city residents; most of them wake up very early to avoid the monster and not forgetting school children being woken up in weird hours of the morning which is not good for them.  However, different scholars have come up with different ways on how to get rid of the  monster but it seems it is going to take quite a long time before that is done.

COMMUTER FARES

Public transit system is a very lucrative business, it is a business where you can either get a lot of money or loose a lot depending on how the business is being run.  On normal occasions, the commuter fares differ depending on the time one is leaving the house or leaving town i.e. off peak and on peak.  The on peak charges are high because of traffic jam and also because most passengers are heading to one direction. Thus, meaning that on their trip back they might not get enough commuters on the way.

THE KILLER RIDE

It cannot be denied that boda bodas have some advantages, as they are convenient and they have provided jobs to thousands of youths. However these benefits have blinded us from the big picture which is that if not controlled, hospitals will continue to be filled with accident victims and the traffic situation will get out of hand.

MANAGING RISK ON OUR ROADS

A high percentage of people use Road transport in their day to day life, therefore it is very important to learn how to manage risk on our roads.  Road transport is one of the most hazardous sectors in the country.  Effective management of related road safety helps reduce the risk.  I know most people will say these are things they are aware of, but just to ask a question if you are aware of them how often do you practice what you know?

EBOLA TALK

Since the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa a lot has been done and said by people in different levels. Part of this talk has been personal opinions from people.  As we all know opinion represent someone’s view but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is the truth of the matter.  As much as the virus has put most people on alert most of the times people find themselves saying things that need not to be said.  I believe the countries that have been affected are doing all they can to contain the virus and therefore they should not be crucified.

Prevalent crimes in the areas listed below include carjacking, robberies, rape, assault, burglary, theft and kidnappings e.t.c.

THE MOST DANGEROUS RECREATIONAL SITES IN NAIROBI

NAIROBI'S MOST DANGEROUS MATATU TERMINI

As a commuter at a matatu terminus all you would think about is how to get to your intended destination and have some rest. In broad daylight or in darkness nothing seems to scare them as they roam in strategic sections like bus termini to rob passengers of valuables with little if any resistance.  Criminals target matatu termini because they know that when people are traveling they tend to carry extra money and also they may get a little confused because of the luggage and commotion.  The most dangerous matatu termini in Nairobi are:

EBOLA VIRUS AWARENESS

The outbreak of Ebola in West Africa (Liberia and Sierra Leone) has put most people on alert. What appeared to be an isolated outbreak has quickly turned into an economic concern across the continent. Due to limited research and inadequate scientific advice, most Africans would have wished to have access to the experimental drug from the United States.  Therefore, as lasting solutions need to be sought, raising awareness of the risk factors for Ebola infection is very important to prevent infection.

THE BODA BODAS

From Nairobi City through to the remote village you can always see a boda boda (motorcycle/bicycle) rider standing and waiting for customers at places.  The boda bodas have spread slowly but steadily from Ugandan-Kenyan border to other regions and boda boda organizations have been founded in many towns. The spread could be due to unemployment as the youth are venturing into other means of sustaining themselves and the boda boda business doesn’t need much funds to start.

TECHNOLOGICAL EVOLUTION IN THE TRANSPORT SECTOR - CCTV Cameras in Matatus

Technological evolution in the transport sector has been linked with the phrases of economic development of the world.  One of the pitfalls in discussing future trends resides at looking at the future as an extrapolation of the past.  A few years ago matatus (public service vehicles) with a screen playing music videos of different genres were seen as very trendy and fashionable and passengers always preferred to board them and be part of the movement.  As technology is constantly changing, public service vehicles have moved a notch higher from just having screens to being fitted with state of the art speakers, Wi-Fi servers and most recently CCTV(Closed Circuit Television) cameras and GPS (Global Positioning System) trackers.

UNIVERSITIES WITH MAIN CAMPUS IN NAIROBI AND ITS ENVIRONS

There are so many universities in Kenya and each of them is identified by where its main campus is located.  Almost all of them have branches in major towns just to reach to the masses but all their graduation ceremonies are held at their main campus.   Therefore it is easier to group them according to their main office location for ease of identification.

Nairobi has the highest number of universities and those that are within its environs, we have indicated the matatu to board in order to arrive well at your intended destination.

HE COULD BE TARGETING YOUR PHONE, "WATCH OUT"

NAIROBI PHONE SNATCHERS
Life in the city is not easy; therefore you should always be alert while in town or when in a matatu heading to your intended destination.  There are people who work very hard in the right way to get a living but then there are those who will wait to rip from someone’s sweat. In Nairobi there are thugs who are specialized in taking passengers’ phones through matatu windows. They have perfected the art in the sense that you wouldn’t even notice how your phone was taken from you.

LOCATION OF MATATU TERMINI IN NAIROBI

Matatus that ply set routes run from termini, and are used for both inter and intra-city travel.  The termini have been strategically located to differentiate their destinations.  For example most of the termini with matatus plying within Nairobi and its environs are located within the city center with a few at the outskirts.  Most of the termini are identified by either the street they are at or by a Landmark building near them.
