NAIROBI'S MOST DANGEROUS NEIGHBORHOODS

I know most of us can identify some areas in Nairobi that are very dangerous and there are times that we cant avoid going to certain places whether dangerous or not, but then again it is good to know what to expect while in such dangerous places although some will say that it’s all about luck.

While most criminals operate at night, some of the crime-prone neighborhoods are more dangerous because armed robberies occur in day time.  A year ago a government-commissioned survey done by Independent Security Research and Information Center identified Nairobi’s most notorious districts for robberies, both day and night. The survey comes in handy because it actually confirmed what others would say they knew and to others it was a great revelation.

Although there are places in Nairobi that have been notorious for criminals for quite some time, some crime zones in Kenya change from time to time.  Therefore, there are areas that may be named but after sometime they stop being among the most dangerous areas because most likely security could have improved or criminals could have moved to other areas for fear of being trailed.  Below are some of the areas that are considered the most dangerous neighborhoods as well as Crime in Nairobi.

Nairobi Slums
Slums are most notorious in all kinds of crimes.  I know most people will tell you that if you venture into one of the slum areas you will be lucky if you escape with your belongings. These areas include;

A section of Mathare known as Nigeria

Mau Mau junction between Kawangware and Kangemi

Kibera, Lunga Lunga slums, Jericho and Soweto because robberies happen anytime of the day.

Makadara and Mukuru kwa Reuben slums, also in the center-east, are hubs for the illegal trade in firearms and also the Kongo area of the western suburb Dagoretti.

Kariokor and Mlango Kubwa in Starehe division are places where gangsters in need of guns can easily hire them anytime.

A spot near Muhindi Mweusi supermarket in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums and an open ground near Huruma chief’s camp are mapped as locations where rapists lurk.

Eastlands
Dandora dampsite in Eastlands,

Stage 41 and Mowlem are zones where you are most likely to be attacked while in Kayole.

Masimba stage and Kona Mbaya areas are the most dangerous.

Donholm, Umoja, and the adjacent Tena estate too have become infamous for criminal attacks.

Take care when visiting Eastleigh

Other Dangerous Neighborhoods;
Nalepo has become a rich man’s hell as a wave of insecurity continues to haunt residents day and night.

Part of Kiserian, has become a playground for killers, robbers, and thieves.  Some home owners have moved away, leaving magnificent houses because of the incessant attacks while others are considering going too. In spite of detailed security measures which homeowners have put in place, the robbers have devised ways of gaining access.  They are now removing stones on security walls since they cannot jump over them because they are protected by electric fences, CCTV cameras and motion sensors. The gangs are now targeting new home owners.

Affluent suburbs in Nairobi such as South C and Westlands were identified with night robberies targeting motorists.

Prevalent Crimes Around these areas are; Robberies, Pickpocketing, Kidnapping, Mugging, Carjacking, Rape.
