This is common in long distance bus
termini, but we can’t dispute the fact that it also happens in termini with
buses plying Nairobi routes and its environs. It doesn't only happen at the most dangerous matatu termini but is wide spread.
When traveling using public means is at times very stressful and
tiring. The thugs and robbers take advantage of the situation and confuse the
already stressed minds of commuters. Here below are some of the tactics/tricks criminals use to rob commuters of their luggage and cash.
Ø Be
careful around the guys who run for your luggage as they direct you to board a
bus. It is true that some of them are
genuine and would like to help but a few could be robbers and may disappear
with your luggage without you noticing it.
Ø Before
you get into the bus make sure that your luggage has been put into the boot to
avoid leaving it at the termini. This
happens whereby, once the passenger gets into the bus the luggage is offloaded
without her/his knowledge.
Ø As
the buses leave the city there are those people who alight on the way before
the destination of the bus and as a result of this, passengers may also loose
their luggage on the way. What happens
is that when a passenger with a luggage alight, the conductor/tout might
offload someone else’s luggage either by mistake or intentionally. Therefore the passengers are advised to be
watchful not to leave their luggage behind.
Ø While at the waiting launch, either waiting to travel or traveled
at night and waiting for daybreak, be very careful because the robbers also
target their victims in those areas.
Here they will sit next to you and wait for you to catch a nap because
most likely you are tired from the journey and that is when they attack or even
rob from you when you are very awake.
Crime in Kenya can be in many ways therefore it is good to know how these criminals operate.
