SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR TERROR THREATS - Traveling

Safety Recommendations while Traveling
Being in a country that has been a terrorist target for sometime, I believe it is time we joined hands to help curb the vice.  Terrorists can burst into any place at any time. We can not be fully aware about terrorist's moves but we can be alert.   It is possible that before a terrorist attack, there could leak some information; these terror threats can help us take some precautions to avoid more harm.  Below are some of the recommendations you should take into consideration while traveling when there is information of a possible terrorist attack.

  • Memorize the locations and phone numbers of possible safe places to go, such as hospitals, police stations etc.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged and if possible have a spare battery, also make sure if possible that you have enough credit so as not to run out of balance in tricky situations.
  • While traveling, we like admiring the scenery and God’s creation, but during a terror threat it is advisable to keep your eye under the seats or anywhere in the bus for any suspicious stuff.
  • Scan your surroundings whenever in an airport, looking for abandoned briefcases, packages or suspicious items, and report them to airport authorities. Then leave immediately.
  • Be careful with strangers--any stranger, even taxi drivers.  Don't tell a stranger too many details about your life or your plans.
  • When in conversation with someone you do trust, be aware of people around you who may be listening.
  • Before driving, check your car to make sure it is in good condition and that nothing looks obviously changed. If you sense something wrong please do not use it until it have been checked thoroughly.
  • When traffic slows, lock your doors and close the windows of the car.
  • Mostly in a bus, it is possible for someone to tell you to hold for them some bag/package.  Beware that some of these packages could be dangerous and therefore don’t easily accept packages from strangers.
  • Do not leave your luggage unattended someone could easily slip some explosives in it.
  • Someone with ill motives can easily get into a bus and leave a luggage with bad explosives without anyone realizing it. Therefore, you should promptly report suspicious behavior, unattended luggage or packages, and strange devices to police or security personnel.
  • I know sometimes we are forced by circumstances but if you can please do not travel into areas affected by the attack or is an expected terrorist target.
  • If possible avoid roads that are notorious for heavy traffic jams because they could be targets for terrorists.

Safety Recommendations while in a Hotel
When traveling and need to spend some days in a hotel, these are the safety recommendations you should be keen on.
  • If someone knocks at your hotel room door, never open it if you don't know who it is and can verify their identity.
  • Arrange meetings with strangers in the public areas of your hotel, never in your room.
  • If a package is delivered that you were not expecting, refuse it.
At times some of the information turn out to be mere rumors but it is advisable to know the necessary precautions in case you are caught off guard.
