HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS IN MOMBASA - SOUTH COAST KENYA



The South Coast is renowned for its silken white sandy beaches, coconut palms, remote islands, Swahili ruins, sheltered lagoons and pellucid blue waters. It boasts of an idyllic climate, which is cooled by the monsoon. A visit to the southern part of Mombasa will leave you breathless and this is why:

Kisite Marine Park and Mpunguti Reserve
Kisite Island is a small waterless coral island, 8 km offshore in the Marine Park. The surrounding waters have well developed coral gardens and a large variety of fish. Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park is the home of Dolphin and Coconut crab in Kenya.
Traditional Dhows sail you back and forth to the underwater park where you can enjoy snorkeling or diving among its colorful coral reefs. Dolphins, turtles, manta rays, angelfish and parrotfish are regularly sighted.
Location of Kisite and Mpunguti Marine Parks
Kisite and Mpunguti Marine Parks are located on the south coast off Shimoni and south of Wasini Island in Kwale.  It at Shimoni an area 40km from Ukunda town in Msambeni District, South coast of Mombasa, Kenya.
Best time to Visit Kisite and Mpunguti Marine Parks
The best time would be between October – January
Mamba Village
Mamba Village, which is situated in Nyali, is East Africa’s largest crocodile farm. Get to see a spectacular scene of blood thirsty crocodiles in frenzy and more especially during feeding time.
Excellent cuisine is available at the Mamba Restaurant, and the house specialty is superbly grilled crocodile meat. Souvenirs of your visit can be bought at the Mamba Souvenir shop located within the village
Shimba Hills is located 56km south of Mombasa town, in Kwale district of coast province, Kenya. It is the only reserve in the country where you will see sable antelope.  The reserve has rolling hills covered in jungle and grassland.
At the baited water hole at Shimba Lodge it is possible that you will see leopard and so many elephants. Shimba Lodge is a charming Treetops-type lodge with pleasant atmosphere.
The ecosystem comprises of a heterogeneous habitat including forestlands, exotic plantations, scrublands and grasslands.
South Coast Beaches
Rainforests with abundant wildlife and birds skirt this idyllic stretch of coast, and coral reefs protect the swimming areas from offshore swells.
·         Shelly Beach - It is at the south of the Likoni Ferry. Shelly Beach is closer to Mombasa along the south coast.
·         Tiwi Beach – It is 17km south of the Likoni Ferry. Tiwi Beach is a popular spot for sunbathing and snorkeling.  
·         Diani Beach – It offers a wide range of activities including: Windsurfing, sailing, snorkeling, diving as well as skiing.  
At Wasini Island you are guaranteed peace; it is heavily wooded with no cars, roads or running water. It takes a couple of hours to stroll around the island on narrow footpaths and en route you will come across Muslim ruins, local women and men at work in the sun, and coral gardens which you can walk through - rather like snorkeling on land.
